Switzerland and Pakistan have signed a memorandum of understanding to improve disaster prevention and response in Pakistan, a region vulnerable to climate change. The agreement was signed by Switzerland's FDFA head Ignazio Cassis and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Cassis traveled to Pakistan at the invitation of Sharif, following visits to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Pakistan is experiencing rising sea levels, intense monsoon rainfalls, and melting glaciers due to climate change.

The MoU aims to enhance collaboration in disaster risk management by pooling resources, knowledge, and experience. Cassis made a commitment to closer cooperation with Pakistan on disaster risk management at a UN conference in January 2023.

Switzerland and Pakistan have a long history of diplomatic relations and Switzerland has supported Pakistan following the floods in 2022. During the visit, Cassis discussed issues such as climate challenges, infrastructure investment, respect for religious minorities, tourism development, and scientific cooperation.

The Swiss delegation also analyzed the consequences of the 2022 floods and rehabilitation work. Cassis held talks with political and business representatives in Islamabad.

He will also meet regional authorities in the province of Sindh and visit Swiss companies in Karachi. In addition to Cassis, the delegation includes National Councillors Greta Gysin, Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter, and Christian Wasserfallen..
